BARBERS & BARISTAS

ROB MCMILLEN / BLIND BARBER NYC

What do you do and how long have you been doing it?
My name is Robert McMillen and I have been barbering on and off for 10+ years.

What’s the best thing about your job/profession?
Community first and foremost - the opportunity to connect with clients and your surroundings is absolutely wonderful.

How would you describe your style?
Basic as can be: t-shirts, jeans, sneakers.

How do you wear your belt?
I tuck in my t-shirts so my belt is exposed, I see it as a staple piece, absolutely necessary for me to feel complete. I never try to match or make a statement. It’s more function than form, but still achieves both.

How does your style convey your personality?
I like to have a uniform look.
As a barber, I appreciate process and routine so my style tends to reflect function.

How do you dress in the AM?
My morning starts with a white t-shirt and blue or black jeans. I tuck in my shirt, loop my belt, lace and tie my shoes, then I’m on my way.

Are you function, fashion or fit?
Nearly always function, but these blend into each other. I’ve always appreciated workwear and simple style.

ALSTON / FIVE LEAVES

What do you do and how long have you been doing it?
I am a Barista at Five Leaves in Brooklyn and a DJ / record hoarder. I’ve been a barista for too long (over 10 years) and a record hoarder for 15 plus years.

What’s the best thing about your job/profession?
The best thing about being a barista for me is the volume of people I personally meet. And I like to make coffee in a high volume environment - it's challenging and fun. As far as records, I can't stop digging. There is always something that I have never heard before and that hopefully others haven't heard ever.

How would you describe your style?
My style is functional and mostly clothes that I have had since I was in high school. I haven't switched up my sneeze too much since then. Dickies and a t-shirt.

How do you wear your belt?
First off, I can't not have a belt on. I always match my belt to my pants, which are normally black.

How does your style convey your personality?
I don't think my style necessarily conveys much about my personality. I generally wear all black when I work so that I don't get coffee stains all over my non-black shirts. That pretty much means most of what I wear now is a black pocket tee with black or blue Dickies. Plain and simple.

How do you dress in the AM?
I literally wear the same pants until it smells like I shouldn't anymore…and I grab the next black shirt on top of the pile before I leave. I wake up at 5:30am for work 5 days a week so I’m not overthinking my clothes most of the time – it’s mostly muscle memory at that hour.

Are you function or fashion or fit?
I would say function, but who doesn't want a functional thing to fit and look good, right? I choose D: function and fit with a little style.

MR. BEE / FRANK’S CHOP SHOP

What do you do and how long have you been doing it?
I am a professional barber and stylist and have been in the industry since my teens.

What’s the best thing about your job/profession?
I appreciate the value of giving a customer the look they desire, and helping them feel better about themselves as well as the conversations.

How would you describe your style?
Classic with a modern touch.

How do you wear your belt?
I wear my belt to complement any given accessory I may be wearing that day. It could be my shoes or print on my shirt.

How does your style convey your personality?
My styles is always a reflection of my spirit and attitude and usually versatile.

How do you dress in the AM?
My outfits start with my pants and shoes. The rest is free style.

Are you function, fashion or fit?
I believe you can have all 3 when executed properly, so I strive to be comfortable and never try to project something I'm not.

RYAN / SWEATSHOP NYC

What do you do and how long have you been doing it?
I own a Design studio / espresso Bar in Williamsburg called Sweatshop. We have been open for just under 2 months and I’m loving every second of it!

What’s the best thing about your job/profession?
The best part about my job is that I get the best of two worlds. I get the social enjoyment of chatting to customers and sitting in the cafe relaxing along with the quiet satisfaction of designing in my own creative space out back in the studio. I really don't think I could be satisfied without that balance of both worlds.

How would you describe your style?
I would describe my style as very simple. I tend to wear a lot of blacks and whites and keep crazy patterns for the runway.

How do you wear your belt?
My belt is the one thing I wear that isn’t black or white. I like a pop of something different, be it leather, color or something just to break up a simple look.

How does your style convey your personality?
I feel I’m a very talkative, approachable guy but also at times pretty introverted, so I think dressing simple and letting my personality do the talking is best.

How do you dress in the AM?
My first thing is jeans. Rain, hail or shine I wear the same pair of black jeans (I own 4 of the same brand). The rest of my outfit is built off of them.

Are you function, fashion or fit?
I’m a total fit kind of guy. Keep it simple, have it fit well and you can’t go wrong.
