With the presidential race heating up, it's a good time to sharpen our debate skills for the sake of democracy. In the world of fashion, no issue is more divisive than the question of whether to tuck in your shirt or leave it out. Let's dive into this debate with belts at the very center.

 

We endorse the shirt tuck with belt.

To be sure, modern life offers few reasons to conceal excess shirt fabric. If your office has no dress code, your calendar is free of weddings, and your father-in-law doesn’t play golf, your need for mandatory tucks is limited. But why let the mandatory be the enemy of the prudent? Personal style is a reflection of your individuality, and that responsibility should be taken seriously.

Consider the message a crisp, tucked-in shirt sends. First, it signals that you are no fan of excess; it’s the sartorial equivalent of politely declining a second helping of mashed potatoes or alternating whiskey with seltzer at the office holiday party. Second, it shows your respect for, and enforcement of, boundaries. In other words, no unruly shirt will be allowed to wreak havoc on your pants. Finally, it’s a chance to highlight your attention to detail — especially through your carefully chosen belt.

Still not convinced? Maybe you’re a candidate for the half-tuck, which is becoming increasingly popular. The half-tuck requires one essential element: a button-down shirt. From there, simply tuck one side of the shirt into your trousers and leave the other side out. Voilà — you’ve achieved shirt equilibrium. Yes, the half-tuck is dangerously close to a neither-here-nor-there solution, if not already a shining example of compromise. But when the alternative is letting your shirt hang out, we say you can have your cake and tuck it too.

History Repeats Itself

In the 1920s, belts won a decisive victory in the battle over what, exactly, should hold up our pants. Suspenders had been a popular choice for centuries, but as military uniforms inspired people to take more functional approaches to their apparel, shoulder straps fell victim to an unforgivable comfort crime — wedgies. And as the general arc of fashion started bending towards lower pant waists, belts were simply the intuitive solution.

Cultural trends aside, the knockout punch was delivered by a single Great Man of history. The Duke of Windsor, a forward-thinking trendsetter who would later become King Edward VII, favored the more casual, American look of belts. He showed his off at parties, giving the sartorial middle finger to his suspender-wearing predecessors. The trend went viral amongst the Duke’s followers (long before Instagram was a thing), belts gained all the momentum, and we the belt-wearers have never really looked back.

Over time, however, we’ve taken the belt for granted, pigeonholing it with a purely utilitarian and often uninteresting existence. People have evolved. Fashion has evolved along with us. But in many ways, we’ve latched the belt to the wrong side of history. We wear our belts wrong, giving them little to no attention. We wear our belts out, making them the fashion equivalent of a blown-out tire. Sometimes, we even neglect to wear our belts at all. Belts have become the forgotten accessory, and it’s time to give them the spotlight.
